The Material Girls

—Jo Clegg, Writer and Material Girl

Ten of us met on comedy scriptwriting courses more than twenty years ago. We had the idea of working together as writers, putting our comedy material on in theatre spaces. We’d show each other scripts at monthly meetings. These were raucous affairs with shared food, tall tales and laughter. A couple more regular ‘Mat Girls’ were welcomed and, developing relationships as friends, we found we’d need to ‘go round the room,’ to get everyone’s news. After a while we started to bring along clothes we’d finished with too, these would be tried on by everyone, often over the clothes we were wearing and often inducing hysterical laughter.  Material Girls became less about writing together and more about helping each other with our work by providing understanding, fresh perspectives, outrage and support along with introductions to agents and producers. The material we’ve shared is the stuff of our work and our lives. Lives much richer for being shared and much poorer now without Gilda to share them with.”
